A Thanksgiving Tradition

Every year during Thanksgiving dinner we go around the table and talk about what we are thankful for. Sometimes it's emotional, sometimes it's funny, but it is always a wonderful experience. It really makes Thanksgiving meaningful and brings joy to our celebration.

We have decided to write the list ahead of time so we can really think about it and remember everything. It's great to recap the year and remind all of us of everything that has happened. Sometimes we even end up giving thanks for negative things that have happened because in retrospect we see the good that came of it.

It has been so great to hear Elliott's list (maybe this will be the first time Allison can make a list?). Little kids think of the most simple and sincere things to be thankful for.

My mom just sent me an article that she read about the very same tradition and thought you guys might be interested... you can read it here.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Lego Train Show

It's the 10th anniversary of the LEGO® Train Show at Cantigny! They are celebrating with a private viewing and party on Saturday, December 10 from 6-8pm. Guests will enjoy the show without lines as they view the spectacular LEGO® displays and meet the builders.  Snacks, desserts and hot chocolate will be served and a cash bar will be available.

Tickets for the party are $12 for adults and $7 for children ages 3-12.  Kids 2 and under are free.  Each ticket includes a holiday keepsake and attendees receive free parking.  Tickets are limited and may be purchased at the webstore or by calling 630.260.8162.

The Lego Train Show will run 9am-4pm on both Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11. The show itself transforms the entire Cantigny Visitors Center into a virtual wonderland for LEGO® fans.  Le Jardin, the Visitor Center’s restaurant and banquet room, is home to the primary LEGO® diorama where creative new elements are added each year.  Secondary displays and a free craft activity occupy the building’s main gallery area and meeting room.

The show is produced by the Northern Illinois LEGO® Train Club and is the group’s largest annual event in terms of floor space and attendance.  Last year’s exhibit attracted more than 6,000 visitors over two days!

Brickmania, a seller of custom model building kits, will be making its second appearance at Cantigny.  Likewise for The Great Chicago Kiddie Express, a trackless train that will chug around outside the Visitors Center each day from 11 am to 3 pm.  Ride tickets will be $1 each or free for kids under 2.

Show admission is free with paid parking of $5 per vehicle (or $2 before 10 am). Cantigny will waive the parking fee for anyone bringing a new and unwrapped toy for the Marine Toys for Tots drop boxes inside the Visitors Center.

While at Cantigny Park, guests are invited to stop by the Robert R. McCormick Museum where seven thematic Christmas trees are on display, each decorated by a different nonprofit organization from DuPage County.  Visitors can vote for their favorite.  Admission to the museum is free.

A Birthday Tradition

I'm not sure where my mom got the idea, but it's a good one; every year on our birthday we would wake up to balloons over our head! While we were sleeping my parents hung balloons from the ceiling so when we opened our eyes we would see big balls of color that corresponded to how old we were. I started doing this for Elliott when he turned two (I hung two balloons over his bed) then continued with three when he turned three etc.

Make a Rainbow Cake!

Welcome guest blogger Anna Sparks! I love this cake that she made and wanted to share with everyone....

Just take a look at this picture and you will want to make this cake with your kids!

I saw this online and just thought it would be so much fun to make. Also the different dyed cakes started me spinning all kinds of ideas (Halloween cake – orange, black, and yellow; St. Pat’s cake – layers of various greens, Christmas cake – red and green; 4th of July – red, white, and blue – you get it!)

So I decided to make this cake the next time I would have an opportunity to serve it to a whole bunch of kids. Because who could love a rainbow cake more than a bunch of two and three year olds?

Creating Games Around the House

InBloom at Oakbrook Center

Now through August 21 Oakbrook Center has fabulous sculptures and fine art pieces throughout the gardens and fountain areas! More than 30 artists and groups from across the country have participated in creating these whimsical displays of art and nature. Your kids will laugh and enjoy the huge frogs and lily pads while you shop and enjoy the warm weather. You can participate by voting for your favorite sculpture by texting the keyword on the sign to 50304 and Oakbrook Center will donate $1 to HCS Family Services for every text sent. When the exhibit closes the pieces will be sold at an auction to benefit HCS Family Services.
