Western Springs Fall Festival

This year the Western Springs Fall Festival is Friday, October 7 from 6:30-8:30pm. I wanted to give you guys a heads up though because they have free pumpkins for the kids to take home and decorate! You can pick up yours this Saturday, October 1 from 9-11pm at the Tower Green. Bring the pumpkins back during the Fall Festival for judging because the winning pumpkins will be displayed all fall in the windows of local businesses!

The Fall Festival is at the Tower Green and will include hayrides, a children's storyteller, and food. We go every year... what a great opportunity to have some hot chocolate and enjoy the brisk fall weather with friends!

Hike & Seek at Bemis Woods

The new Chicago Hike & Seek event will be held at Bemis Woods South in Western Springs this Saturday, September 24. I love the way this event is described by saying "trade screen time for green time!"

The hike starts at 9am and lasts about 2-3 hours. There will be five Stop & Study Stations where your children will enjoy nature facts and interactive lessons. After completing each Stop & Study Station they will earn a colorful naturalist badge!

A Birthday Tradition

I'm not sure where my mom got the idea, but it's a good one; every year on our birthday we would wake up to balloons over our head! While we were sleeping my parents hung balloons from the ceiling so when we opened our eyes we would see big balls of color that corresponded to how old we were. I started doing this for Elliott when he turned two (I hung two balloons over his bed) then continued with three when he turned three etc.

Make a Rainbow Cake!

Welcome guest blogger Anna Sparks! I love this cake that she made and wanted to share with everyone....

Just take a look at this picture and you will want to make this cake with your kids!

I saw this online and just thought it would be so much fun to make. Also the different dyed cakes started me spinning all kinds of ideas (Halloween cake – orange, black, and yellow; St. Pat’s cake – layers of various greens, Christmas cake – red and green; 4th of July – red, white, and blue – you get it!)

So I decided to make this cake the next time I would have an opportunity to serve it to a whole bunch of kids. Because who could love a rainbow cake more than a bunch of two and three year olds?
